Welcome to our Society

On behalf of the members of Philosophy of Education Society of Australasia, I welcome you to our website.

The purpose of our Society is to advance educational research, policy, and practice. Our specialist discipline is the philosophy of education. The Society was founded in 1971.

Our annual conference provides the major venue in Australasia for the presentation of research papers and discussions about education.

Linda Graham

1. The President, on behalf of the Society, congratulates Linda Graham on her prestigious appointment. John said "it is fantastic news, the award of a PESA Scholarship to Linda two years ago was insightful early recognition of her ability". See below.

Linda Graham

As was announced: "Dr Linda Graham has been awarded one of six Macquarie University Research Fellowships for 2009.  This was a highly competitive grant with over 130 applications across all disciplines.  Dr Graham is the first in any field of education to have won this prestigious three year research-only fellowship.  Her award comes with $50,000 in research funding to support her proposal to investigate the political economy of special educational needs across four international contexts: New South Wales, England, Alberta and Finland. While she and her international partners won an SSHRC grant earlier this year to support the Finland/Alberta comparison, this fellowship will provide Dr Graham with the support needed to research the Australian component. Linda will be taking up her appointment with the Children and Families Research Centre in the Australian Centre for Educational Studies at Macquarie University in January 2009."

Memorial: John Codd

The Society records the death of John Codd on Christmas Day 2007.

The President wrote as follows:

Dear Colleagues

It is indeed sad news about John Codd's passing. That he was able to attend the PESA Conference Dinner to receive his Fellowship was a great honour for all us and his eloquent address to us was a great privilege to hear. His grace and humility shone through that evening. Our prayers are with his family at this time. May he rest in peace.

The Vice President wrote as follows:

John Codd was a highly regarded Fellow of this society. Through his professional career he has contributed much to the fields of educational policy studies, and to the study of the philosophy of education. Latterly, as Professor of Policy Studies in Education at Massey University College of Education, New Zealand he co-edited several books on New Zealand education, and wrote research papers which were published in Educational Philosophy and Theory, the Journal of Education Policy, ACCESS and New Zealand Journal of Educational Studies. He was at various times co-editor of the NZJES, General Editor of Delta and most recently co-authored, with Mark Olssen and Anne-Marie O’Neill, Education Policy: Globalization, Citizenship and Education (Sage Publications, London, 2004). His recent research interests focused particularly on higher education policy and the implications of globalisation for education.

In his 2006 address to graduating students at the Massey University College Education he laid stress on the importance of teaching in the future of the world in relation to issues of ecology, globalisation and human survival. Teaching, he said is a time honoured and noble profession. The task of teachers was essential if people are (to) ‘ have some hope of shaping and controlling their future’. John Codd wrote his own epitaph in this same speech when he described himself as ‘as a person who has devoted my working life to teaching, reflecting and writing about education’. This is precisely how we, who are engaged in the same tasks, remember and honour him.

PESA scholarships further the interests of the Society by encouraging doctoral students to engage with philosophical issues in education. The value of each scholarship is $A10,000 and two are awarded each year.
